The idea behind environmental strategies is to reduce illegal activity relating to tobacco and alcohol related products. This can be done a number of ways. Some examples include keg registration, restrictions at community events, parking lot lights at alcohol outlets, and server training. Some strategies we already have in place include alcohol compliance checks, tobacco compliance checks, and community awareness via a bulletin board. We have also had local ordinance changes that favor reducing access by youth.
The Council, under contract with the Washington County Comprehensive Community Services Agency (CCSA) has been participating in the Wisconsin WINS program to decrease youth access to tobacco products. The Wisconsin WINS strategy of Recognition and Reminder is a science based approach proven to reduce youth access to tobacco products.
