Project Alert is a school based drug prevention curriculum for middle school youth. It is designated as an exemplary model program. This curriculum has been proven to dramatically reduce both the onset and regular use of substances among middle school youth.
The two-year, fourteen session program, which includes eleven core course and three booster sessions, focuses on substances that adolescents are most likely to use: alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and inhalants.
Project Alert uses participatory activities and videos to help:
- Motivate adolescents against drug use.
- Teach teens the skills and strategies needed to reduce pro-drug pressures.
- Establish non-drug using terms.
Guided classroom discussions and small group activities stimulate peer interaction and challenge students beliefs and perceptions. Role playing activities help students learn and master resistance skills. Parent involved homework assignments extend the learning process.
Students receiving Project Alert:
- Reduce initiation of marijuana use by 30%
- Decreased current marijuana use by 60%
- Reduce past month cigarette use by 20-25%
- Decrease regular and heavy smoking by 33-55%
- Substantially reduced students pro-drug attitudes and beliefs
