STARS (Start Taking Alcohol Risks Seriously)

STARS is a health promotion program for preventing alcohol use among youth. Children participating in the STARS program will benefit by receiving an otherwise unplanned health promotion program aimed at delaying the use of alcohol among children. This innovative program may result in avoidance of or reductions in alcohol use among youth. Youth who participate in the program will receive the following:

  1. brief (no more than 20 minutes) health consultations provided by a nurse about how to avoid alcohol use each year
  2. up to eight Key Fact Postcards mailed to parents/guardians on what to say to their child about staying away from alcohol
  3. four weekly Take Home lessons for parents/guardians and children to complete and return, with facts and activities on how kids can avoid alcohol.
